About this role
Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) provides industry-leading scalability, data availability, security, and performance for object storage. Through the use of pioneering techniques in large-scale distributed computing, developers can durably store their data on AWS's proven computing infrastructure to achieve virtually limitless storage capacity at minimal cost. Amazon S3 provides simple APIs that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data at any time. Customers of all sizes, from day one startups to the world's largest enterprises, use Amazon S3 to deliver next-generation applications that range from data analytics to AI to photo and video archives. While S3 has seen tremendous growth since launch in 2006, we are still in the early stages of realizing its full potential. As a Sr. Manager, Software Development for S3 Request Processing, you will be responsible for leading a group of top talent that builds the software handling every S3 request at massive scale. Your organization owns the request processing platform, the business logic that implements S3's API surface, and the security controls that keep customer data safe. We build innovative software solutions to provide S3 customers secure, durable, available, and performant request handling with virtually infinite scale and extremely low cost. In this role you will drive the roadmap, deliver new functionality and architectures, and raise the bar for operational excellence. You'll lead multiple engineering teams to spearhead new technologies that change what is possible within S3. You'll also own the financial health of your services and engage directly with senior customers to represent the S3 business. Success in this role requires a leader experienced in establishing and building relationships with a wide range of peers, including senior AWS leaders, customers at all levels of experience and responsibility, deeply technical software and systems engineers within the team, and partner organizations across S3 and AWS. This leader must have the proven skills to easily switch between weighing in on complex engineering details of a high-throughput, low-latency request path, taking a long-term view of the business, growing and developing the next generation of AWS engineering and management talent, and operating as a large-organization leader. It requires an ability to prioritize work for the direct team and partner teams, establish goals, and focus attention on the most important inputs to drive the desired business outcomes. This leader must be capable of scaling themselves and their team to meet the ever-increasing demands of a fast-growing business. You'll need to excel at hiring and developing your technical talent. S3's request processing tier is on the critical path for every customer interaction with the service worldwide, so a passion and discipline around operational excellence, security, and availability is essential. Come work hard and make history with Amazon S3! Key job responsibilities - Lead and grow a multi-team organization of senior engineers and engineering managers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, deep ownership, and customer obsession. - Define and execute a 1 to 3 year technical roadmap, balancing near-term customer wins with long-horizon bets on query performance, table maintenance, metadata scale, and Iceberg evolution. - Drive architectural decisions for distributed systems at exabyte scale, including metadata services, compaction and optimization pipelines, snapshot and transaction management, and engine integrations. - Make S3 Tables the highest performing, most cost effective home for Apache Iceberg anywhere, and contribute back to the Iceberg open source project. - Partner with product, business, and AWS analytics leadership to translate customer needs into engineering priorities that move adoption and trust. - Establish operational excellence standards across availability, durability, latency, and throughput, and lead the org
