Senior Software Engineer, Reporting

We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join our Toast Reporting Experience (T-REX) team in Dublin. T-REX owns the reporting and analytics layer that restaurant owners use to understand and run their businesses - turning the wealth of data that flows through Toast into clear, actionable insights. When a restaurant owner checks their sales trends, labour costs, or menu performance, that's T-REX.

The team is in the middle of a significant evolution. We've spent the past year building the foundations - a modern reporting stack, shared UI components, OpenSearch-backed data pipelines - and we're now shipping the features that sit on top of it. The work ahead spans AI-native integrations, natural language interfaces, and expanding the data layer that powers intelligent experiences across Toast. These are hands-on engineering problems at the intersection of product, data, and AI.

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

• Strong backend engineering skills in Kotlin, Java, or another object-oriented language, with solid instincts around testing and code quality

• Experience designing and building APIs and frameworks that other teams depend on - platform thinking, not just feature delivery

• Experience with GraphQL and REST API design

• Comfortable working on AI-native features and cross-team integrations - this work spans multiple systems and requires collaboration as much as execution

• The ability to take a complex business problem, understand what the user actually needs, and build something that solves it cleanly

• You use AI tooling as a genuine part of your workflow, not an afterthought

• You care about the people using what you build - not just whether it works, but whether it's useful

What will help you stand out (Nonessential Skills/Nice to Haves)

• Experience working with large datasets and query engines (OpenSearch or similar)

• Familiarity with data pipelines or event-driven architectures (Kafka, Pulsar, or similar)

• Frontend experience in React or TypeScript - enough to contribute across the stack when needed

• Understanding of API principals (REST/GraphQL) and integration with frontend applications
