About This Role The Global Medical Director, Rare Disease (SMA) Medical Education role is part of Rare Disease (SMA/ALS) Global Medical team, a strategic partner within Biogen that helps inform medical practice across our therapeutic areas and pipeline to improve meaningful patient outcomes.  As a key member of this team the incumbent reports into to the Rare Disease (SMA/ALS) Global Medical Lead and is the accountable lead for shaping and driving the global medical education strategy for Biogen's Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) portfolio — spanning marketed assets — in close collaboration with Clinical Development, the Product Development (PDC), regional/ICOE medical teams, and commercial/market access partners. What You’ll Do Strategy Lead the long-range planning, development and execution of the Global SMA medical education strategy, tactics, and budget, advancing critical scientific narratives across regions and aligning with Biogen's Global Medical Plan and portfolio priorities. Serve as the Global medical expert for the SMA portfolio, guiding lifecycle management and evidence strategy across the treatment journey. Lead publication planning, KME/scientific engagement strategy and education plans for the SMA franchise, shaping treatment optimization and standard-of-care narratives ahead of evolving clinical practice. Scientific Leadership Provide medical oversight and direction across clinical development programs and lead scientific positioning and strategy. Own the neurofilament light chain (NfL) narrative and biomarker positioning, driving alignment across initiatives, functions, and regions, and resolving inconsistencies in the scientific story. Partner with Evidence Generation Medical Director on the global SMA evidence generation strategy, including real-world evidence, biomarker development, and registrational study support, in close collaboration and alignment with regional clinical experts and cross-functional partners. Present data at global medical affairs events, including advisory boards, trainings, congresses, and medical education events; build and nurture relationships with external stakeholders (HCPs, healthcare institutions, advocacy groups) across the global SMA therapeutic landscape. Governance & Execution Serve as the global medical contact for key functions/stakeholders (e.g., Clinical Development, PDC, regional/ICOE medical teams, Commercial, Market Access, Legal/Compliance, Value & Evidence Generation) and as global medical lead for aligning processes, decision making, medical tactics, and metrics through a robust operating rhythm. Provide medical review and direction across publications and scientific communications (abstracts, posters, manuscripts), Medical Information (including complex/non-standard escalations), and affiliate/regional support requests; reinforce and train governance processes for scientific narrative, publication content, and agency involvement. Lead end-to-end planning and content development for global SMA medical symposia (e.g., the WMS Medical Symposium), including speaker engagement, contracting, and coordination with regional medical teams and cross-functional partners. Lead medical training strategy and planning tied to congress readouts, new manuscript data, and key scientific topics, including delivery of training materials and support for related Q&A; contribute to development/adaptation of medical materials (presentations, briefs, talking points) per review requirements. Co-lead recurring cross-functional medical forums, including a monthly meeting to align global SMA medical teams and a quarterly insights forum to synthesize medical insights and inform planning.
