Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care Functions: Interviews patients regarding medical concerns Measures and documents vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height Documents patient reported health issues in EMR Obtains and documents patient medical histories Performs routine, in-scope, medical procedures as requested Prepares patients and treatment rooms for exams Drapes patients with covering and positions instruments and equipment Cleans and sterilizes instruments Maintains a clean work area Keeps exam rooms cleaned and stocked with needed medical supplies Reviews physician orders and lab requests and follows up as needed Communicates test results to patients as directed Processes prescriptions as approved and directed Assists in patient education with approved educational tools, periodicals, flyers, and handouts Assists with Department of Transportation, FMLA, and Medical Disability application forms Manages/responds to patient phone calls and patient portal messages Maintains all Practice Health and Safety standards Administrative Functions: Inputs data into the computer to maintain patient records Routes necessary paperwork associated with patient referrals Contacts other medical practices as needed to make referrals Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials Pre-certifies exams and collects pre-certifications from managed care Faxes reports Performs daily refrigerator temperature checks and maintains accurate logs Laboratory Functions: Performs CLIA waived testing Assembles equipment such as tourniquets, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work trays according to the requirements for specified tests or procedures Verifies or records the identity of the patient or donor Interprets the physician's orders and secures a requisition before performing tests Obtains the correct type and amount of specimen, as directed by the physician, nurse, or manager Draws blood from the patient's finger, ear lobe, or vein, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood samples Labels, routes, and/or stores specimens for subsequent processing Records all blood draws in the lab register; marks when results are received; records results Gives injections or treatments, and performs routine laboratory tests Reports test results to physicians, notifying them of any abnormalities Documents all requests and results of lab work accurately Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed for the equipment Cleans and stocks the phlebotomy area Surgery Functions: Assists in procedures Measures and documents vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height Hands instruments and materials to the physician as directed Cleans/sterilizes instrumentation between cases Returns clean/sterilized equipment to its location Regularly checks trays, instrumentation and sterile equipment for outdated or compromised package integrity Assists in movement and positioning of patients, utilizing appropriate body mechanics Assists with clean-up of trash and linen by using appropriate antibacterial
