Job Description
The Digital Sector at Leidos currently has an opening for a Senior Software Engineer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of Information & Technology (OIT). In this contract, Leidos assists with the underlying infrastructure, tools, and operational services used to build, deploy, secure, and run VA health applications. The Senior Software Engineer designs, develops, and supports secure enterprise applications, cloud-native services, and automated software delivery solutions. This role focuses on CI/CD automation, containerization, Kubernetes deployments, secure coding practices, observability, and collaboration with DevSecOps and SRE teams to deliver reliable, mission-critical systems.
Primary Responsibilities
The selected candidate will: Design, build, and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines for assigned applications, including test integration and artifact/build traceability across environments. Implement automated container image builds, tagging, signing, and vulnerability scanning as part of the standard build process. Instrument applications with required logging, metrics, and tracing standards; collaborate with SRE personnel to align SLIs, SLOs, and monitoring requirements. Implement deployment strategies (blue/green, canary, rolling) and validate system readiness prior to production releases. Apply secure coding standards and dependency management practices; support shift-left security practices (i.e., integrating security testing and secure coding standards early in design and development, rather than only before deployment) throughout the SDLC. Collaborate with DevSecOps and SRE teams on release engineering, post-deployment validation, and rollback/backout procedures. Contribute to continuous improvement of automation, security integration, and deployment efficiency across HAPS applications. Please be aware that this role may require some light travel as deemed necessary by the customer.
Basic Qualifications
Candidates should possess: Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 10 years of experience designing, developing, and supporting enterprise software applications; candidates without a degree must have at least 14 years of relevant experience. Experience supporting: Containerized applications Kubernetes deployments CI/CD pipelines Automated testing Secure coding practices Service integrations Production support for mission-critical systems Experience building automated unit, integration, regression, performance, and security tests into build and release workflows. Experience with containerization and Kubernetes-based application deployment Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for application environments and supporting cloud resources. Experience instrumenting applications with logging, metrics, and tracing to support observability and reliability monitoring. Must be able to occasionally travelC. Must have a US Citizenship The ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance. The ability to travel, as needed, to customer sites.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring: Experience implementing blue/green, canary, rolling, or other advanced deployment strategies Experience applying secure coding standards and approved dependency management practices. Experience collaborating with Site Reliability Engineers to align application instrumentation with SLIs and SLOs. Experience improving deployment frequency and reducing change failure rate. Experience maintaining artifact repositories and build traceability across sandbox, staging, and production environments.
