Title: Heavy-duty mechanic Unit: Canada Supply Chain Name & Title of Supervisor: Site Supervisor & Manager Position Scope / Impact of Error:   The Heavy Duty Mechanic role repairs and maintains a variety of heavy equipment including heavy trucks, trailers, forklifts, container carriers, backhoes, trenchers, loaders and skid steers and associated equipment. Impact and recommendations, decisions and actions taken by the employee: Moderate to High Position Authority: The mechanic makes recommendations to the supervisor (or designate) who will make the final decision.

Overview:   The Heavy Equipment Mechanic repairs, troubleshoots, adjusts, overhauls and maintains heavy mobile equipment required for site and peat harvesting work and operations. The Plant Operator may be required to work on holidays and weekends from time to time. Specific Accountabilities:   Perform heavy equipment maintenance activities including installation, repair, troubleshooting, diagnostics and preventive maintenance; Disassemble and reassemble engines and mechanical units to inspect and diagnose parts using computerized test equipment, calibration devices, gauges, etc; Repair and overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment; Repair air conditioning systems; Calibrate load monitoring indicators to ensure safe and reliable lifts; Rebuild hydraulic cylinders, valves, planetary drive units, suspensions, springs, bushings and centre pivots; Replace seals and bearings, axle brakes and crane rigging; Provide input and data for processing work orders, invoices, equipment repair records and activity reports; Comply with all established safety policies and standards, including the identification, use and proper procedures for handling or disposal of hazardous waste; Performs recovery operations as required; Act as a point of contact for maintenance issues in the absence of the maintenance supervisor or foreman; Carry out any additional duties as assigned. Requisite Qualifications: College diploma in heavy vehicle mechanics or relevant work experience; Must be experienced in major system repairs, with a minimum of 3 years experience; Ability to read and understand schematics, blueprints and technical drawings; Specialized knowledge and skills in the repair and maintenance of diesel and heavy motor vehicles; Ability to replace major components and parts of engineering and construction equipment; Practical understanding of hydraulic theory, gearing and transmission; Certification and experience with automotive air conditioning; Familiarity with electronics, ability to read blueprints or use electronic diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot repairs; Ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, crouch, kneel, push and pull; Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds or twenty-three (23) kilos; Assist in lifting up to one hundred (100) pounds or forty-five (45) kilograms; Some equipment may be extremely heavy and will require a great deal of strength to move or handle; Must have very good manual dexterity, and excellent hand-eye coordination; Able to work in indoor and outdoor conditions and be exposed to dust, fumes and gases from running engines; Valid driving licence; Note that living and working conditions at the duty station could be remote and uncomfortable. Long hours, exposure to weather conditions is dangerous. Staff must be aware of the need to relocate at short notice and in adverse conditions.
