Lead Accountant

SUMMARY: This position is expected to coordinate and perform financial accounting and reporting functions for the Los Angeles Refinery. In addition to the responsibilities listed below, this position will be expected to assist accountants and business partners in resolving day to day issues.  This position interacts with refinery personnel, including refinery management as well as other refineries, Findlay Refining and Findlay/SAT accounting.

Participate in monthly financial closeout activities. Prepare/coordinate monthly financial entries to properly account for refinery expenses and other financial activity. Prepare/coordinate monthly account reconciliations Coordinate and participate in the development of refinery’s annual expense budget and monthly updates, and the analysis of actual versus budgeted expenditures. Assist in completion of the biennial Solomon Study and prepare analysis of the results. Assist in special projects as assigned and provide back-up for other accounting functions as required. Maintains records, accounts and ledgers pertaining to various phases of company activity; and prepares related schedules, statements and reports to analyze the results of activity. Strong communication skills are required to effectively receive and distribute information to other accounting department personnel, operational department personnel, various levels of management, governmental agencies, and other MPC locations. Participates in creating and implementing new policies, methods, and procedures designed to improve accounting controls and efficiency. Serve as the “lead” for the accounting department.

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is required.  Accounting degree is preferred. 5+ years of Accounting/Finance experience required.
