About this role
Overview
Join the team responsible for building and operating the critical infrastructure that Azure services rely on for availability, reliability, and scale. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help design, build, and evolve the infrastructure that powers Azure Throttling Solutions (ATS). This role spans the full stack and focuses on the foundational technologies that support every service, including large-scale performance, reliability, security hardening, observability, and live-site excellence. ATS runs on Azure Service Fabric across Azure regions and sovereign clouds, and this role helps ensure that the platform remains resilient, secure, efficient, and highly available. The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex infrastructure challenges and improving shared platforms where every enhancement benefits multiple services and engineering teams. Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees, we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
Build and operate highly reliable infrastructure Design, build, and operate distributed systems that power ATS across Azure regions and sovereign clouds. Drive availability, performance, scalability, security, and cost efficiency across the Data Plane, Management Plane, and Control Plane. Drive architecture and technical strategy Lead design discussions, evaluate alternatives, and create design documents for complex infrastructure initiatives. Balance tradeoffs across performance, scalability, resilience, operational simplicity, and cost. Deliver changes safely and incrementally Break down large migrations and infrastructure changes into phased rollouts with clear validation and rollback strategies. Validate solutions through incremental deployment approaches before broad adoption. Improve observability and operational excellence Build deep telemetry and monitoring capabilities into platform services. Serve as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) during incidents, conduct root cause analysis, author postmortems, and drive long-term reliability improvements. Enhance troubleshooting guides, runbooks, and operational processes. Raise the engineering bar Review code for correctness, security, maintainability, and testability. Mentor engineers through design reviews, technical discussions, and engineering best practices. Establish reusable patterns and standards across teams. Collaborate across engineering teams Partner across ATS organizations, including Data Plane, Management Plane, Control Plane, Client SDK, and Azure partner teams. Resolve dependencies, align integration strategies, and improve end-to-end platform reliability. Apply AI-assisted engineering practices Leverage AI-powered development tools, including GitHub Copilot, throughout the software development lifecycle for design exploration, implementation, testing, and review while maintaining accountability for delivered solutions.
