About this role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we're looking for talented people who want to help. You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion. Key job responsibilities Team Leadership & People Management - Manage a team of Network Development Engineers (NDEs) focused on capacity restoration tooling, automation, and network engineering solutions - Hire, develop, coach, and promote engineers; build a high-performing team that delivers successfully and sustainably - Strategically assign projects to grow engineer skillsets toward next-level demonstration - Drive a culture of operational excellence, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement - Establish and maintain a sustainable on-call rotation that honors SLAs without burning out engineers Strategic Direction & Execution - Define the vision, tenets, and strategic roadmap for the team and align with wider organizational goals - Own a line-up of capacity restoration products. - Represent the team autonomously to senior leadership; drive long-term strategic direction with limited guidance - Write effective narratives (PR/FAQ, six-pager) for senior leaders; provide input to OP1/OP2 planning - Proactively identify architectural gaps and drive resolution of deficiencies in capacity restoration systems Technical Ownership - Drive engineering efforts to solve complex backbone/border network capacity problems at the architectural level - Understand system limitations, scaling factors, and reasons behind architectural decisions; question proposals and test assumptions - Make trade-offs between short-term team needs and long-term business/architecture needs, inclusive of cost - Drive simplification and optimization of capacity restoration processes and tooling - Decouple dependencies between fabrics and prevent duplicative engineering efforts across teams - Ensure development is focused on the right solutions with mindfulness of long-term architecture consequences Operational Excellence - Define audit mechanisms and metrics that explain team performance and variance against goals - Manage deferred maintenance across all systems; allocate engineering time to reduce technical debt - Hold postmortems and drive root-cause resolution; document lessons learned in COEs - Ensure team compliance with Amazon security, data handling, and operational policies - Collaborate cross-functionally with backbone operations, border engineering, and controller teams Scope and Impact - Own the development of one or more capacity restoration products spanning backbone and border network fabrics - Network products may have external or multi-org impact; trusted with organizational goals - Influence strategic direction of the team and may influence other team roadmaps - Work spans organizations and geographies in support of network availability, scalability, cost, and performance About the team The Capacity Restoration Team (CRT) is responsible for restoring backbone and border network capacity impacted by failures, maintenance events, and service disruptions across Amazon's global network infrastructure.
