About this role
Job Overview 🧩 We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join a New Products team. In this role, you'll design and ship net-new products that expand what Buildkite offers developers. These products will stand on their own but integrate cleanly with our existing platform and codebase. This is an exciting opportunity to get in at the ground floor of a brand-new team within an established org, shape products from a blank page, and put them in front of the world’s leading engineering teams operating at serious scale.
*This is a hybrid role and will require 3 days per week in San Francisco, CA.
🚀 What You'll Do
• Build and ship new products end to end, writing high-quality, reliable code that integrates smoothly with Buildkite's existing suite
• Move fast by steering agentic coding tools effectively. You are a power-user of agentic coding tools, get strong output from agents and know when to trust, correct, or override them
• Make sound system design calls: model data well, choose the right structures and algorithms, and design for scale from the start
• Work directly with databases at scale and third-party APIs (e.g. GitHub) to build developer tooling that's fast and dependable
• Collaborate closely in person during the early design phase: whiteboarding, prototyping, and shaping product direction alongside the team
🎨 What You Bring
• 5+ years of experience building and shipping production software
• Proven success shipping code used at scale (1M+ consumer users or 100k+ enterprise users)
• Strong CS fundamentals (you can reason clearly about system design, data structures, and algorithms)
• Experience working in large codebases and building developer tooling
• Working knowledge of databases at scale and integrating third-party APIs
• Fluency with agentic coding tools and a track record of producing quality work quickly with them
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, and enthusiasm for in-person, whiteboard-heavy design work at the early stages of product development.
✨ Additional Experience That's Useful
• Experience at a Series B/C startup or scale-up
• A CS degree from a strong program, or engineering experience at a company with a high technical hiring bar (e.g. Google)
• Good taste in developer-friendly UX
✨ Why Join Buildkite At Buildkite, we value kindness, autonomy, and collaboration. You'll join a team building brand-new products from scratch, working in-person in San Francisco and also collaborating remotely with our Australian colleagues, and your work will directly help some of the world's best engineering teams build and ship software faster and more safely.
You'll also have access to a range of benefits designed to support you in doing your best work, including:
• Competitive compensation and benefits
• A collaborative team culture
• Opportunities for growth and learning
• Meaningful work with world-class companies
• A supportive, inclusive team where your ideas matter
🧘 Benefits Benefits added per country directly from Greenhouse.
