Principal Software Engineer II (Cloud)

This is a highly influential, hands-on engineering position supporting the development and ongoing enhancement of Walgreens’ enterprise cloud platform. The team primarily supports Microsoft Azure, along with Walgreens’ private cloud environment running on OpenStack.

Design infrastructure solutions for applications and business teams deploying into Azure or the private cloud Serve as both a hands-on engineer and technical architect Architect complex multi-region/availability zone cloud platform solutions in support of business needs. Work closely with Enterprise Architecture, Information Security, and internal business partners Help develop and improve infrastructure deployment capabilities through Harness IDP/Infrastructure As Code Ensure solutions meet architecture, security, compliance, and operational standards Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, including FTEs and contractors, without formal people-management responsibility About Walgreens Founded in 1901, Walgreens (www.walgreens.com) proudly serves nearly 9 million customers and patients each day across its approximately 8,500 stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Bachelor's degree and at least 8 years of experience in Engineering, Software Engineering or related field OR a High School Diploma/GED and at least 11 years of experience in Engineering, Software Engineering or related field Experience writing code for highly complex and strategic online applications, microservices or mobile applications Experience in algorithms, systems, architecture and bits-and-bytes Experience with programming languages important to the organization and has in-depth knowledge of Unix/Linux, C++ or Java or Node and Service Oriented Architecture Experience leading cross-functional teams and mentoring individual contributors At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace. At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross- functional team leadership. Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Microsoft Azure infrastructure experience Kubernetes, particularly Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and knowledge of Istio. Containerization and microservices environments Terraform and Ansible infrastructure-as-code Cloud networking knowledge, including network flows, firewalls, load balancers, DNS, service meshes, VNETs, and related components Experience designing scalable and resilient infrastructure solutions OpenStack experience is helpful but not required, as the team is continuing to develop its knowledge in this area Independent decision-making and accountability Transparency and a willingness to raise risks or concerns early Strong stakeholder communication and organizational awareness The ability to navigate ambiguity, rapid change, and competing priorities Strategic thinking and the ability to evaluate and clearly explain tradeoffs Flexibility and the ability to pivot quickly A collaborative leadership style and the ability to influence without formal authority We will consider employment of qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
